Best Android games 2013

10 Dead Trigger 2

Visually, the first Dead Trigger is one of the slickest shooters you can find knocking around in the Google Play Store and Dead Trigger 2 ensures the zombie-blasting is even better second time round. Banding together to stop a deadly infection from spreading across the world is secondary to ploughing through tougher zombies with the latest update adding new missions and tweaks to the difficulty levels. It’s still a really easy game to play and In-app purchases don’t get in the way of the fun either.

9 Ridiculous Fishing - Tale of Redemption

Winner of an Apple design award, it doesn’t take long to realise why Ridiculous Fishing is well, so ridiculous. Casting your line into the water, the challenge is to avoid snagging fish on the way down. When you get a bite, you need to collect as many fish on the way back up by tilting your phone or tablet. As the hook reaches the surface the fish are tossed in the air at which point you can pull out guns, bazookas and shotguns to blast them all to pieces. There's no other game like it and you'll keep on going back for more.

8 Papa Pear Saga

From the people who brought you a little game called Candy Crush Saga, Papa Pear Saga is a Peggle-style puzzler where you need to shoot ‘Papa Pears’ into barrels at the bottom of the screen and avoid the obstacles. Already a hugely popular Facebook game, there’s 100 colourful levels to get through and if you lose lives you will have to wait it out to get some more. It’s easy to play, offers enough of a challenge and is another game to put into the ‘addictive games’ folder on your Android phone or tablet.

7 Fist of Awesome

A game that started life as a Kickstarter project, the time-travelling lumberjack is finally on Android. Essentially an 8-bit beat-em-up in the style of Double Dragon and Streets of Rage, the plaid shirt-wearing Tim Burr travels through time punching bears. You can kick, jump, grab your way through the time periods and get upgrades to unlock new attack modes and additional characters. Did we mention you can punch loads of bears?

6 Riptide GP 2

The jet ski racer with great visuals like the first Riptide, in Riptide GP 2 it's not just the graphics that get better. Keeping the same great gameplay, the new Vector Engine 4 improve the wave physics to make races more unpredictable. There’s more vehicles and upgrades to unlock and career mode is now more indepth. You’ll have the most fun playing online multiplayer and if you have a Tegra 4-powered smartphone or tablet you can also enjoy more detailed HD graphics.

5 Hero of Many

Following the trend of dark, atmospheric games like Contre Jour and Limbo, Hero of Many is a great looker with really simple gameplay. Playing a glowing white ball your task is to safely lead a team of tadpoles around underwater caverns by swiping, touching and pinching the screen. There’s no dialogue to help you on your way, just a beautiful soundtrack to go with the gorgeous visuals.

4 Terraria

The indie Sandbox building game launched on the PC back in 2011 and has finally made its way into the Google Play Store. Essentially a 2D version of Minecraft, in Terraria you need to dig deep to mine materials and craft armour and weaponry from chopped down trees to make steady progress. The pixel art graphics look great, the game mechanics work well on a smaller screen and the bosses can be hard as nails to beat. If you haven’t played it elsewhere, Terraria is well worth the spend.

3 Ittel Dew

As close you are going to get to playing Zelda on your phone or tablet (if you don’t count emulators), Ittle Dew is a top down view platformer that’s clearly been inspired by the iconic Nintendo game. Washed up on a mysterious island there's several dungeons to explore and hunt out the key items. There’s plenty of witty, funny dialogue along the way and visuals to make it more than just a Zelda rip-off.

2 Active Soccer

We could have picked Fluid Football Versus or Football Manager Handheld 2014, but Active Soccer harks back to a time when most football games were played on an Atari ST or an Amiga. With a top down view giving Active Soccer a Sensible Soccer feel to proceedings, there’s just a virtual control stick and two buttons to control the action. There’s no licenses so no real names and the 3D graphics are not the greatest. Crucially it plays well and is one of the most enjoyable football games on Android.

1 Anomaly 2

The third game in the series of tower defense games that flips the concept on its head, Anomaly 2 ups the visuals, adds new weapons and now throws multiplayer into the mix. Essentially a real-time strategy game, you can choose to do the defending or the attacking. The campaign will keep you occupied for some time with its multiple endings and the multiplayer has enough tactical depth to make it as challenging as the first two instalments.
